Homer does portray women in a sexist fashion. In a dialogue with Athena, Odysseus states, "You are the best at... spinning yarns" (296). This just comes to show that women are portrayed in a domesticated manner. Also, Penelope is portrayed as a helpless woman that has no authority over the suitors. She appears to be the cliche "damsel in distress." Finally, Penelope is supposedly portrayed as one that is dominated by males, which is stereotypical in ancient societies.

I completely disagree with you. It was a woman's job to spin yarn and hold down the house. Penelope was the person in charge in the house. She held a reasonably high position. Athena is a god, therefore she is going to be the best at anything she is compared to. No male really dominates any female in this story. In fact, Odysseus is held captive by Calypso; a female. And Athena pretty much leads him along his entire quest, shes a girl too.

I, like Justin, completely disagree with you. Although your quote would point to Homer portraying women as people who sit around the house and do chores, you forget to mention the fact that Penelope is the hed of the house. Also, you only have one quote to back up your claim.
